On November 22, 2008 we had 3 students representing Overlake at the ChessMates Fall Kickoff chess tournament.  Sixth graders Ian McPherson and Jack Sather both scored a perfect 5 wins for 5 matches, finishing 1st and 2nd in the 5th-8th grade section.  Seventh grader Drew Chouinard added 3 wins, bolstering the Overlake team score.  The team score is the sum of the top 4 players representing the school.  So with only three players, Overlake managed to earn the 2nd Place team trophy.  In route to victory, both Ian and Jack scored significant upsets over players ranked above them. With their respective wins, they were elevated to #5 and #6 among active 6th grade players in the State of WA.  This was a great warm-up for the boys before they head off to Nationals in a couple weeks.
