 2009-2010 Chess Season Ramping Up

Upcoming Tournaments

The Tournaments information page has been updated with the middle school playing opportunities.  Most of the tournaments offer a 7-8 section or 7-12 section, but a few are K-6 Only (noted).  List includes scholastic, league, Seattle Chess Club, and lcoal USCF events from various sources.  See Tournament Information.

Middle School League Play

MS Chess League is back on. Squads are

Squad A:

  • Ian McPherson
  • Will Lundgren
  • Trevor Marcus
  • Nolan Michaels

Squad B:

  • Jack Sather
  • Will Spener
  • Drew Chouinard
  • Clovis Wong

We have a long list of alternates as well.  Alternates are able to play for free in side tournament on league days.  List of players will be finalized for each date in week leading up to league event.  Alternates will be subbed in as necessary.

Quick Details:
  • Squads consist of 4 players.
  • Squads generally must play in order of rating.  Highest rated on board 1, second highest on board 2, etc..

  • A school can enter multiple squads and/or have alternates.  Individual play is available for alternates, incomplete or non-matched squads
  • Tournament host Open Section for alternate players so everyone plays.

  • Play is 7 rounds over 7 non-consecutive weeks (dates below)

  • First 3 dates are like qualifiers.  Final 3 dates are like playoffs (All Squads play in Team Quads finals.  First 4 dates are used to establish what the quads should be)
  • Games are G/60 on Friday nights.  So the evening will never last more than 2 hours after the round starts.

  • Scoring is a single team score win/lose/draw  (1-0, 0-1, 1/2-1/2) determined by aggregate team score  (>2,  <2, =2)

  • Make-up dates can be arranged

  • Fee is $50 per squad for entire season.  Seems reasonable.  Roughly $12.50 per player for up to 7 dates.

Format:
4 players squads placed in descending rating order on boards 1-4.    League/Team play is a unique format that has 4 players lining up side by side in matches against an opposing team.  The only score that matters is the overall team score. (see scoring above in quick details).

Dates:

  • Dec 11

  • Jan 8

  • Jan 29

  • Feb 26

  • Mar 19

  • Apr 30

Location:
Seattle Chess Club in North Seattle. (Near Northgate mall)  I appears that the location will be 2150 N 107th St.  Northway Square East Building.  Confirmation and full directions will come later.

Time:
4 PM start.  Given the location, this means that the kids would need to leave directly from school

Transportation:
No Bus services.  We as parents would need to work it out.  This is no doubt a complicating factor, but I'm sure we can organize some carpools.

Practice?:
Best way to practice is by attending zero period chess (Wednesdays) and by playing G20 (20 mins per side) or above online.  Some chess resource recommendations are here I Recommend FICS (Free Internet Chess Server) with the BabaChess client to get started.  The kids can play competitive games without having to pay...
