Tournament of Champions / Spring Fling
On April 11th 2009, two Overlake Middle School students played in the 4-round Tournament of Champions. To qualify for this event, a player must have earned a perfect score of 5-0 in a qualifying tournament during the scholastic chess season. This is considered the "best of the best" tournament and it's an honor to even play in it.
Ian McPherson and Jack Sather both received medals and certificates commemorating their participation in this highly competitive tournament . Jack finished with 3 wins in 4 matches, suffering only a single loss to the highest rated K-6 player in the state of Washington. Jack finished in 5th place overall. Ian lost a single game to the tournament's second highest rated player, and drew another to finish with 2.5 points and the 10th place position.
On the same day, 7th grader Drew Chouinard played in the 7-12th section at the Mountlake Terrace Spring Fling Tournament. This was also a four round tournament that included cash prizes for the top places. Similar to the other tournament, Drew's only losses were to the two highest rated players in the section with an average rating of over 1600. Drew finished in the 7th place.
Congrats Overlake chess players!
